2008 Cleveland Browns Draft Grade

Finally, back to some good old fashion football talk. Today we are going to look at the 2008 NFL Draft, this time specifically looking at the Cleveland Browns. In 2008, the Browns did not have a pick until the fourth round and had only five total picks. They failed to utilize those picks very well also. Overall, you could call this one of the worst drafts of all time. After the jump, look at specific pick grades and an overall grade.

Round 4 Pick 5: Beau Bell, ILB, UNLV   – Bell only lasted one year on the team, being waived in training camp in 2009. Pick Grade: F

Round 4 Pick 12: Martin Rucker, TE, Missouri: Rucker has rotated between the Browns, Eagles, and Cowboys over the past three year’s but has not made any impact in the NFL. Pick Grade: F

Round 6 Pick 24: Ahtyba Rubin, DT, Iowa State: Rubin has become the only bright spot of this putrid draft, playing a back up role in 2008 and 2009, before dominating in 2010 with 87 tackles. Pick Grade: A

Round 6 Pick 25: Paul Hubbard, WR, Wisconsin: Hubbard has not recorded a single catch in the NFL and is practice squad for the Bills. Ouch. Pick Grade: F

Round 7 Pick 24: Alex Hall, DE, St. Augustine’s: Hall has tried to stick with the Browns, Giants, Cardinals, Steelers, and Eagles but has not done much. He did record some tackles in 2009 and 2010 so this was not a terrible pick. Pick Grade: D

Best Pick: Ahtyba Rubin: Rubin was by far the bright spot of this draft. His production at NT/DT will help the Browns transition to the new 3-4 defense.

Worst Pick: Beau Bell/Martin Rucker: Both were brought in early in the 4th round and neither ever did anything in the NFL. Epic failure with these two picks by the Browns.

Overall Draft Grade: F: With only five late round picks. the Browns had to get at least two contributors for it to be a D. They only got one with four other huge busts. Terrible work.

Also, I am still looking for a couple writers to help keep the site running and to help keep it different. If you are interested in writing about the NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAA football/basketball on whatever schedule you want, email me at: steelersrule125(at)gmail.com.
